The Master in Libraries, Archives and Digital Continuity (MUBACD-UC3M), presents a complete and innovative curriculum (BOE, N. 284, November 28, 2023) to train professionals capable of leading the advanced management of information, data and documents in digital environments.
Today's world poses challenges, not only to GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) professionals, but also to any specialist working on information systems and/or data in the context of the Web. GLAM professionals and Web experts must operate in an ecosystem of digital continuity that requires skills to ensure access, preservation and responsible reuse of knowledge.
This master's degree addresses, from a comprehensive and strategic vision, the entire life cycle of digital resources (born digital or digitized) from their organization, management and preservation, to their recovery, dissemination and responsible reuse. The MUBACD-UC3M prepares students to design and implement sustainable digital information systems and services (libraries, archives and electronic collections, data infrastructures and portals, etc.) and to ensure the continuity, security and reuse of knowledge in the context of digital transformation.

- VIRTUAL MODALITY
- Inicio
The Master's Degree in Libraries, Archives, and Digital Continuity is taught in a virtual modality. Virtual teaching falls under what can be called blended learning or a hybrid model, which is expressly recognized in new educational models adapted to the European Higher Education Area. This model involves the convergence of face-to-face teaching and online learning, facilitating a learning process where the student's independent work gains greater value. This allows students to approach their studies with greater flexibility, better balancing the time demands of their professional career or family obligations with the requirements of academic master's studies.
The virtual model adopted by this Master's degree reduces traditional face-to-face teaching, providing more opportunities for skill development and fostering an active learning attitude in students. Thus, this Master's includes both in-person activities (which can also be followed remotely) and online activities, pedagogically structured to facilitate learning.
The combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities enables continuous didactic interaction throughout both semesters. Despite the scheduling of synchronous in-person activities, the working philosophy of this master's program is that all teaching activities can be followed 100% online, ensuring that students from other countries or regions do not have to physically travel to campus to follow and benefit from the in-person activities.
In the academic calendar, several in-person sessions are scheduled on roughly alternating Fridays, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the first semester, and from 12:00 PM (or 1:00 PM) to 9:00 PM in the second. Each session includes one class for each subject assigned to the semester. Classes last 50 minutes with 10-minute breaks in between, and one 20-minute break midway through the session. Additionally, at the beginning of each semester, there will be an extra in-person session that will include a presentation of the Master's program as a whole, the teaching tools, and the Master's Thesis preparation. These explanations are complemented by two classes on the operation and services of the UC3M Libraries and resources for preparing the Master's Thesis.
Attending in-person classes, while recommended, is not mandatory, as classes are broadcast live so students can follow and participate remotely (via chat, X/Twitter, etc.) and are recorded so they can be viewed and studied at any time and as many times as needed.
The majority of the effort in this Master's teaching model relies on preparing appropriate digital learning materials for virtual learning, as well as on activities planned by the professors, which students will complete individually or in groups. The Aula Global learning management platform, based on Moodle, and Kaltura software will be used.
Kaltura is the video recording, streaming, and publishing system that has been integrated into Aula Global as a complementary tool. Both students and professors have a Kaltura account with access to as many folders as courses they take or teach. These folders contain additional videos uploaded by professors as well as the recorded and broadcasted sessions of the in-person classes. This tool offers several highly useful features for following in-person class content through recordings and for enabling teaching staff to expand standard interactive teaching activities, such as:
- Video and clip searching within the learning platform: The Smart Search feature allows users to search for any word spoken in a video, captured on screen, shown in a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, or included in notes. Kaltura also provides automatic and manual closed captioning, making videos more accessible and offering enhanced search capabilities for both students and faculty.
- Multi-format video distribution tailored to specific student groups.
- Live streaming capabilities for events, demonstrations, or training sessions.
- Fail-safe recording, which ensures recordings remain intact despite potential network issues during capture.
Students also have access to the Virtual Classroom (Aula Virtual), a resource that provides both faculty and students with a web-accessible virtual computer equipped with the software applications required for course practicals.
Professors continuously monitor activities by interacting with students through various communication channels (forums, chat, email, etc.) and answering any questions within a reasonable timeframe, always in alignment with the academic calendar.
The teaching and learning environment of this Master's degree is highly technology-driven through the extensive use of ICTs. This environment adapts to the need for a personalized learning process—essential given the diverse personal circumstances, experience, background, and ages of its students—while overcoming the physical boundaries of students residing across multiple continents and Spanish regions while completing over 90% of their studies remotely.
Learning assessment is conducted through various scheduled activities (formative assessment), whose weight in the final grade is established at the beginning of the course, as well as through final exams. Final exams take place on the educational platform and can optionally be taken either on-site at 91̽»¨ or online. Authorizations for online exams will be issued to students who request it. In such cases, an automated system is strictly applied to ensure the absence of academic fraud or identity impersonation during tests, the use of which must be authorized in writing by the student to receive approval from the Master's Direction. No exam lacking these verification measures will be considered valid.
In addition, at least two of the continuous assessment tests for each course must be taken online and synchronously, on the day and time specified by the teaching staff; this rule may apply to all tests. Final exams will be concentrated into one or two days. Taking online synchronous continuous assessment tests will require the use of an automated system to verify the absence of academic fraud or identity impersonation. To take online exams and tests, students must sign a written document confirming that they have received the information regarding the anti-fraud system and accepting its requirements. Students must have the necessary personal technical equipment to follow online teaching, such as a computer with a broadband internet connection, a webcam with a microphone, and sufficient processing power to allow access and interaction with the teaching platform as well as video recording required by the anti-fraud system.
- EVALUATION
During the e-learning training, the evaluation of the knowledge, skills and attitudes learned will be based on:
- Control of knowledge of each module by means of continuous evaluation tests (such as questionnaires, written assignments, practicals, debates in the student forum or by other telematic means, etc.) and a mandatory final exam.
- Access to the platform

Complementary work practice
The University Master's degree in Digital Libraries, Archives and Continuity offers its students the possibility of carrying out a complementary work placement adding further credits to those contained in the syllabus. These work placements will enable students to complete their education while acquiring experience in activities relating to the skills and competence that the Master's course aims to provide. These activities will be concerned with a document or archive management service in a field characterised by the use of information technologies and digitalisation. The work placement may also take place in consultancies or businesses concerned with implementation of this type of service or with digital conservation systems.
To this effect, the University will enter into a series of agreements with centres interested in the programme of complementary practices. Students will be supervised, guided and assessed by two tutors, one appointed by the Master's board of management and another by the firm where the work placement is carried out. In addition, the University ensures that students are covered by an accident and civil liability insurance policy.
The work placements will be for a minimum period of 180 hours (6 ECTS) and further periods consisting of additional 90 hour modules up to a maximum duration of 900 hours (30 ECTS). Given the virtual nature of the Master, the class timetable may be either morning or afternoon, with Friday afternoons free.
As the ECTS corresponding to the work placement are considered to be educational activities, students will be required to register for these, paying only 25% of the official cost of the credit. Thus a standard work placement of 180 hours (6 ECTS) would cost 67,53€ (EU) or 126,11€ (non EU).*
These credits, added to the 60 obtained through the normal syllabus will be included in the student's academic certificate as a further subject, and will be graded with a pass or fail.
The students can consult the offer of practices that the centres annually make, with the indication of their duration in hours (and therefore in ECTS), the place in which they will be carried out and a brief description of the specific activities to be carried out.
Once students have chosen the centre where they will carry out their work placement and its duration, the Master's administration department will register the corresponding credits and will complete the details of each place in appendix to the agreement.
Complementary practices can also be done without the need to pay tuition, through the university Career Service (Orientación & Empleo). In this case they are not reflected in the academic record.
* According to current fees for the 23/24 academic year, pending approval by the Community of Madrid for the 24/25 academic year.
